Hey friends,

I wanted to share with you that I had the chance to do a guest post yesterday on Lemon and Raspberry’s New Year’s Day Blog Party!  What a fun way to start 2013 and so much available in one day.

Amy always provides lots of information and motivation for all kinds of business and personal projects throughout the year and this is the way she kicks it off.

You’ll find tips and inspiration about Memory Keeping, Blogging, Photography, Travel, Marketing and just general creativity and productivity.  She also provides creative prompts for journaling the details of your life.

My post is called Memory Keeping with a Purpose. If you have a few minutes stop by and say hi to Amy, check it out and tell her that I sent you. She’s running a free mini online workshop and several giveaways as part of the New Year’s Blog Party, so sign up to participate or for a chance to win one of the prizes.

Hey friends,

I’m excited to announce that I have a new URL for my blog and it’s so easy to remember.

TouristOfLife.me

Fun huh?  Add this to your bookmarks or blog reader so you can come back anytime!  If you have the old URL bookmarked it should redirect to the new one too.

Plus, in celebration of my new URL and Blog name, I’m giving away a”Tourist of Life” treasure box!  Just a few things that you’ll need to be a Tourist of Life.

  • 2 boxes of sparklers – what’s a celebration without sparklers?

  • 1 mini suitcase filled with chocolates – So easy to fit in your carry-on and who doesn’t crave chocolate on a long trip?

  • 1 spiral bound lined journal (8  1/2 “x 5 1/4″)- Isn’t this one a beauty inside and out! Spiral bound books are so easy to write in and great for documenting the details of your next trip.

  • And 3 cardstock luggage tags with travel themed graphics (there’s one on the top of the journal too).  Add your contact information to the back, then get them laminated at your local print shop.

Maybe you’d like these for yourself or maybe you’d like to use them to fill a special someone’s Easter or Mother’s Day basket. I’ll be drawing the winner next Tuesday night, March 27th, from everyone who comments below.  So…be sure to answer these two questions for a chance to win.

1.  What is your most favorite place to visit and why?

2. Which of these countries (my most recent trips) would you like to learn about first? I just can’t decide where to start.

  • Scotland
  • Ireland
  • Israel
  • Jordan
  • Bosnia

Just for fun, this is me having lunch at Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness in Scotland. It was taken by my daughter, Amy.  Until I get around to posting it, you can find out more about our Scotland trip at her blog ThoseCrazySchuberts.com.

You can also find lots of tips and ideas for creative small businesses at Amy’s other site – LemonandRaspberry.com.

I promise I’ll start posting about my trips, so be sure to come back and see them.  They were all so interesting…  And don’t forget to come back on Tuesday or Wednesday to see who wins the treasure box!

Where have you traveled to lately?  You don’t need to leave the country to enjoy a fun adventure.

I am such a proud mom!  We recently learned that our daughter, Amy T. Schubert (don’t you just love that smile) and her blog “Lemon and Raspberry” was mentioned in this article below that showcases just 16 favorite blogs and websites that are worth a visit by writers.

The magazine that this came from is none other than “The Writer“, which is also celebrating 125 years of publishing – WOW!  It’s in their March 2012 issue and available at your favorite magazine stand or bookstore.  We picked ours up at Barnes and Noble.

The first image is page 1 of the article.  After you click on the image, you should be able to zoom in by clicking again if it’s not large enough to read yet.

The Writer mag article

The second image below (click to enlarge) is Page 2 of the article.  In the right column, contributing editor Stephanie Dickison mentions Lemon and Raspberry as one of her top 3 websites.  Awesome!  I love this, especially since her blog doesn’t really focus on writing, but many other facets of the creative process.  Way to go Teegan!  I just LOVE having creative kids.

Walt Disney Concert Hall
Walt Disney Concert Hall

I’m interrupting my stories about Scotland to celebrate my 600th post by doing a little catch up on what’s going on in my life at this moment.

Today I’m in downtown L.A. I’m here to attend BlogWorld Social Media Business Summit & New Media Expo (#BWELA)!  I’m really excited about the avalanche of workshops that I will encounter over the next 3 days and can’t wait to get started sorting out which ones I’ll attend in person and which I’ll listen to after the conference.

BUT, before I dive into the conference I wanted to share a little of what inspired me today.  You see, not so very long ago I lived in a suburb of L.A.  In fact I lived just about 40 miles north of here for 18 years.  And while we didn’t come into the “city” frequently, we did have a chance to enjoy the benefits occasionally.  I’m not really a city girl,  I’m fairly certain that I wouldn’t want to live here, but I love visiting.  Something about the soaring skyline and bustling traffic energizes me.  I get the feeling that important things are happening here.  Deals are being brokered, historic decisions are being made and ideas emerge here that are changing the world.

These are just a few of the things that inspire me about L.A.:

  1. Driving past the iconic Capitol Records building
  2. Passing billboards about new TV shows and movies (do you see that in your town?)
  3. Enjoying dinner outdoors in November
  4. Landing on radio stations in 7 or 8 different languages
  5. The city skyline – it’s breathtaking
  6. Exit signs for Little Armenia, and Historic Filipinotown
  7. Realizing that the Pacific Ocean is just minutes away.
  8. Appreciating all the sculptures and great architecture in downtown
  9. Remembering that they have an “all news-all the time” radio station (AM1070). I miss that.
  10. Celebrating the fact that the L.A. Philharmonic plays regularly at two awesome venues – The Walt Disney Concert Hall (see below) and the Hollywood Bowl (one of my absolute favorites). I miss that too.

So here’s how my day went in this inspiring city…

I drove from the Burbank airport this morning and met my daughter and son-in-law for breakfast (which I don’t get to do nearly as often as I’d like).  Amy and Andrew are a couple of inspiring people too, but that story will have to wait for another time.  I enjoyed a few hours with them, then headed down to the hotel where I’ll be staying for the duration of the conference.

On the way there, I passed the AMAZING, Frank Gehry designed, Walt Disney Concert Hall just a few blocks from the hotel.  After checking in, it was such a gorgeous day that I decided to walk there.  If you’ve never seen it in person, you really should make a point to go.  I would love to take a tour and would especially love to attend a performance there.  I understand that the acoustics in the auditorium are nearly perfect.  Another fun tidbit is that there’s a small theater and gallery space in one corner of the Hall, called REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater).  I used to work at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) when REDCAT was being built and the staff and student body were anxiously awaiting it’s completion, so I have a bit of a vested interest in the place.

Anyway, here are a few photos of this awe inspiring complex.

The amazing thing is not so much imagining the building, but actually making it come to life with all those curves and waves.  It’s spectacular!

While there I stopped in the gift shop because these places are just dripping with culture and creativity.  I saw this great T-shirt and a bunch of other inspirational items, but it wasn’t really a shopping day for me, and I can’t really afford a $120 scarf no matter how beautiful it is, so I had to pass on all but a couple of little things that I picked up for Christmas gifts.

After dinner, I had a chance to go out and play a little with my camera and here’s a fun shot.

So now, it’s off to bed to rest up for 3 days of inspiration and information to come.

Have you ever been to Los Angeles?  If not, what do you find inspiring about your own town?

Hope to see you soon!

Today is the 5th Anniversary of my little blog!

Wow!

Can you believe it?  I’ve been lovingly pouring my heart into this little corner of cyberspace for 5 years.  Sometimes sporadically and sometimes consistently, but always with an eye on sharing a little bit of myself and the beauty in God’s world around us.  I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride and will continue to come along.  I’m excited to say that I have subscribers in countries as far away as Spain, Korea and the UK and as close as just a few blocks away. Thank you all for joining me in this adventure called life.

I have lots of things in store for you in the coming year.  We’ll travel to distant lands and have adventures close to home as well.  We’ll be creative in decorating our homes, cooking in our kitchens, sewing with our machines, celebrating the holidays and oh SO much more…and I hope to launch a new travel-related blog and website, but I can’t share what that will be about yet.

As I’ve mentioned before, we’re heading out on vacation in the next few days and I haven’t had time to set up anything extra special for the anniversary celebration, but I hope to do something fun in a few weeks when we return.  Who knows, maybe I’ll find a treasure in Scotland or Ireland that I can use for a giveaway!  How would you like that?

For the moment, I’ll say so long.  I hope to do at least a few posts while we’re on the road, but we’ll see how much time, energy and internet access allows.    Please know that I’ll be thinking of you often and of what tidbits I can share when the opportunity arises.

What would you like for me to find out about Scotland or Ireland?  Is there something you’d like to see or learn about?

Let me know and I’ll do my best to uncover the mystery for you.

See you soon!

We interrupt our regular posting series to announce that our daughter, Amy is presenting a new online workshop!

You can check out all the details here!

She also posted some pics from our recent visit with them and our trip to LaJolla.  You can find those here.

My pics are coming soon, I promise.  You’re gonna love the cute seal pictures and I have some good ones of Amy and Andrew too.

We have commitments tonight and tomorrow night, but I should get some more out over the weekend.

By the way, what’s your favorite day to read new blog posts?  I’m always hesitant to do new posts on the weekend because everyone is out and about and I’m afraid that they’ll get lost in the shuffle.  I’d love to target the best days for you, so let me know what they are.

Thanks for reading!  Hope you’re having an awesome summer!

O.k., so its clear that you’re probably not getting much inspiration from me lately, but I do have a recommendation for you to check out someone who is a prolific blogger.  And this week, she’s running an online Blogging Workshop on “Lemon and Raspberry” called Better Blog Content 2.0.  You can find all the details here.

Full disclosure: she happens to be my daughter, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have great stuff to share and to help you in the blogging world.  In fact this might just inspire me to start posting again.  See, this post is proof that it’s working already. :-)  I love this picture of her from some recent “outtakes” at her  home photo shoot.  Note the raspberry lemonade in the photo for her “Lemon and Raspberry” blog.  Clever huh?

But, it’s getting more and more difficult for me to choose what to blog about.  We just added a few more events to the list.  Last week I helped my dear friend, Linda on a photo shoot with her daughter-in-law and granddaughters, which was a blast!  I’ll post more on that.

Then I went with my husband and the Ryans to Tucson to hear my husband and Bob perform at the Tucson Folk Festival.  I promise, soon I’ll post about that trip, as well as an awesome Mexican restaurant that we visited there.  It’s a place that you won’t want to miss if you’re in the Tucson area and are hungry for Mexican food.  Stay tuned for all that and more to come.

Thanks for hanging in there with me during this busy time of life.

O.k., so I know that the last few months have been pretty sketchy as far as my blog posting.  You wouldn’t believe the back up of fun things that I have to post about though.  Here are a few of the activities that I have piling up in my photo files.  I can almost bet that I won’t get to all of them, but if you see something that sounds particularly interesting, let me know and I’ll work on those ASAP. Besides the busy schedule, I also have been having some technical problems with my laptop AND just hit the wall with the message that my external drive (where I store all my photos) is full.  Looks like I’ll be shopping for a new external drive.  Hopefully we won’t need to get a new laptop, but I’m a little concerned that it might breakdown on our trip in August.  Hopefully it will be resolved one way or the other before then.

Here’s a little sneak peak for one of the events.  This is Steve Larson and Bob Ryan performing in The Dubious Brothers Radio (Stage) Show for the Open Door to the World Annual Fundraiser last weekend.  Sorry, I don’t have the exact name of it.  Click to enlarge.  Lots more photos on that to come.

This is my first year at BlogWorld Expo and the first time in a long time that I’ve been to a big conference, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to what the attendees would be like and if I would actually connect with anyone in this sea of faces.  Would I be the old lady in the bunch with all these kids looking at me like I was their mother crashing the party?  Would I be the lowly sporadic part time blogger who would be laughed out of the room when these other blog superstars showed up?  Would everyone else be hip and cool and I’d be that nerdy woman that was just out of touch?  Those thoughts crossed my mind.

Now, I generally think of myself as a friendly person and can be outgoing when I need to be.  However, when thrown into the “sea” with no perceived expertise, authority or recognition factor, I find it very easy to shrink into the corner and just observe.   So…how has it been going so far?  Very well, I think!  Upon arriving I realized quickly that there’s quite a diversity of demographics here at the conference.  Older and younger, men and women, full time and part time bloggers, business attire and casual (thankfully its mostly casual).

I’m pretty proud of myself.  Yesterday I even went to the “Networking” Luncheon (mainly because the cost was included in my registration and I had to eat lunch anyway).  I didn’t have any intention of “networking” to gain any advantage for myself, but I did meet quite a wide range of very interesting people and I’m glad to have spent the time with them.  And today I jumped into a conversation with a couple of really nice guys while waiting in line for lunch at the hotel and we ended up sitting together to eat (because it’s never fun to sit alone when you can be learning about others and their world).  So here’s a list of just a few of those interesting folks and links to their respective blogs or websites.

Steve Cobb at Activ8Social –  Steve is a nice young man from the DC area.  Here’s what I found on their website. “Activ8Social specializes in digital branding, social media network development and strategy, sponsorship activation, web property management, and digital word-of-mouth promotion for clients in the sports and entertainment industries.” That sounded interesting, but when he mentioned that his company represented Tim Lincecum my ears really perked up.  Now I’m not a huge baseball fan, but even I know who Tim Lincecum is!  It was great talking with Steve about various celebrities and how well they’re doing in connecting to their communities.

Susan Spencer at BriefCaseEssentials.com – Susan is quite a bit older than I am and has a wealth of experience leading and owning businesses. In fact she was once the acting General Manager of the Philadelphia Eagles football team!  She owned several meat processing businesses throughout her career as well.  She has been a leader in male dominated business arenas and has written about her experiences to help other women in the same situation.

Scott Lum at Digital Marketing Muse.com – Scott is from the Seattle area and has two little kiddos.  He works for a major technology company and does a little blogging on the side.  It was great to chat with him about his take-aways from the conference since he’s coming from a much different business perspective than I am.

Tom Terenyi at Digital Natives Consulting AND WeAreKenya.org – Tom is the owner and principal consultant in his business, plus he has just recently started a non-profit org to help children in Kenya with food, clothing, shelter and education.

Kristi Trimmer at OrangeDragonflyBlog.com – As you can see from her site, Kristi is a talented lady!  In one of our workshops she mentioned that she was from Phoenix and even though her site isn’t strictly about desert gardening, she gets lots of questions about it.  She’s wondering if she should focus on that more and/or maybe create another site/blog specifically on that topic.  I encouraged her to do that because we need all the help we can get in our hot dry climate.

So this is just a smattering of the people that I’ve met the last 2 days and that doesn’t even include the key note and workshop speakers that have been excellent.  I hope it gives you a little bit of an idea of the various backgrounds that are represented at the conference.  I’d love to see some statistics on the demographics here.  It’s really quite interesting!

I’m so glad I came!
